Nintendo announced Wednesday that the new addition to their much-loved line DS portable game console, the DSi XL, will hit stores on March 28, but recently received a quick view of the device.

The DSi XL, which will retail for $ 189.99 in burgundy or bronze, is actually a larger version of the beloved DSi. The XL has two 4.2-inch screens, larger than the original two-screen DSi 3.25 inches. The new screens also have better viewing angles of the sides. While the DS games are not really intended for multiple players, some new games for DSi XL are able to take advantage of these side angles much better.

The DSi XL has been using the small family stylus that can be stored in the device but also includes a more pen-like stylus, which is definitely much more comfortable if you are playing for a long time. The XL also will come preloaded with Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math, and Photo Clock, as well as two free applications: the Nintendo DSi Browser and Flipnote Studio.

When we met with Nintendo a few weeks ago, we were able to check out a few new games that will play on all of the DS consoles, but they’ll truly work best on the DSi XL.

WarioWare: DIY Showcase features more than 70 micro-games and a DIY cool new feature that allows players to create their own games, but also can play the Nintendo Wii.

We also saw America’s Test Kitchen: Let’s Get Cooking, based on the television show of the same name. That game features 300 recipes video tutorials and step by step tutorials recipe. I especially like how the game is read the instructions aloud while you cook. It also has shopping lists for you to carry with you to the grocery store.

Both games will go on sale March 28.

Nintendo is also launching several new Pokémon titles to go with the DSi XL. We got to play with Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver. Both games feature all 493 Pokemons, but the main new feature is the Pokewalker that arrive utilizing the games.

Pokewalker lets you transfer your captured Pokémon DSI to a little “Tamagotchi-like” device that resembles a digital clock, without the band. This lets you have a Pokemon with you and exercise it. The more it takes to take and go further, more powerful it becomes. Once it gets strong enough, you can find objects with Pokewalker with wild Pokémon with him. These games should also come in 28.
