I never thought I would own a Kindle. Ever. I love the feel, smell and look of books. But, with a free round trip airline ticket to Italy in hand and a recent price drop in the device, I thought, "why not splurge on something that I could read on the plane?" So I purchased a Kindle 2. And it has transformed me. I take it everywhere: work, my mom's countless doctor appointments, and (I cringe to say) in the car, to read a quick passage while stuck in traffic(I live in suburban Detroit; no mass transit here.) Since purchasing Kindle 2 weeks ago I have read two "books." And am reading pieces of three others simultaneously. I find the font consistent (unlike books, in which the font varies) and very easy on my 53 year old eyes. The button-ology is easy to use. And I love being able to sample a book before reading. I use to spend a lot of money on books that collected dust on the shelf, or books that, once read, were donated to the public library. And with my public library's budget woes, I can no longer, as a "guest" patron, reserve a best selling book, which means sometimes months to find a best seller available on the shelf for check out. I have no doubt that there will be a better version of Kindle in the future, but for now I am very happy to be a Kindle 2 owner. It has turned me back into the voracious reader I used to be. And that's a good thing.
